OpenELEC 5.0.7 Released: Switch to Kodi 14.2 Helix

OpenELEC 5.0

written by Alejandro April 1, 2015

OpenELEC is a lightweight OS, built from the ground up, primarily to run Kodi on various devices, including Raspberry Pi. It runs smoothly Raspberry Pi compared to other media center OSes. This post introduces the recently released OpenELEC 5.0.7 update.

What’s New in OpenELEC 5.0.7

OpenELEC started supporting Raspberry Pi 2.0 since version 5.0.1. OpenELEC 5.0.7 includes the following previous updates and fixes:

  • The most relevant change is the upgrade from XBMC (Gotham) to Kodi 14.2 (Helix). This comes with a branding switch and a change in the storage, creating a symlink to /storage/.kodi in /storage/.xbmc to ensure compatibility with addons or scripts. Due to the potential for problems from this renaming, it is advisable to make a full backup before updating, and performing a soft reset after (Reset System settings to defaults).
  • OpenELEC-5.0.7 upgrades the Linux kernel, from 3.16 to 3.17.
  • Following the heartbleed disclosure, OpenELEC 5.0.7 introduces a switch from OpenSSL to LibreSSL. The LibreSSL package includes better licensing and simplifies OpenELEC by making it possible to remove support for other cryptographic libraries such as GnuTLS.
  • Freescale iMX6 support added for a limited number of boxes. At first, support is included for the CuBox-i and CuboxTV mini devices.
  • Discontinued support for the mk1 (silver) AppleTV build.
